EuroBoss 2003 - Spa-Francorchamps
FYI ...
KLAAS ACT! Sunday 31st August 2003, Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium: Starting from pole, Klaas Zwart secured an impressive victory in his Ascari Judd V10 to take the Championship lead as EuroBOSS reached its halfway stage in Spa. 37 seconds separated the Dutchman from second placed Max Wakefield as Zwart recorded a second consecutive win and EuroBOSS once again put on a show for the Belgian public. The race had a dramatic start, even before the cars left the grid, as a marshal reacted to a smoking exhaust on the Reynard Cosworth of Robbie Stirling and driver and car were doused by fire extinguisher. Eventually the race was restarted with the Indy car, fuelled by 'green' bio-ethanol, included. >From the re-start Wakefield took full advantage of his front row position to strengthen his hold on second place as an intriguing battle unfolded between Stirling, Mathew Mortlock in an Arrows Judd, and the Ascari Judds of Nick Dalli and Henk Thuis. Close racing has always been a feature of EuroBOSS and this race was no exception as all four drivers pushed for the final podium place. Dalli, who had been down in fifth place after one lap eventually secured the third spot and almost stole second as he closed down Wakefield in the closing stages. In his first ever EuroBOSS race Abba Kogan won the Masters Class driving the 1989 Lotus type 101, formerly raced by fellow Brazilian Nelson Piquet. He finished 10th overall whilst Frank Lyons extended his lead in the 3000 Class with another winning performance in his Lola Cosworth V8 . Klaas Zwart, Driver, Team Ascari: "In the warm-up lap I thought that I had suffered a transmission problem and was very worried about the car. Thankfully everything was fine but I decided not to over push, just in case. It is only my second race at Spa and it was very pleasing to win at such an historic circuit. I am particularly pleased for Braam Smith and everyone at Team Ascari who has worked so hard to put four cars on the track and see them all race very competitively throughout." Abba Kogan, Driver, Classic Team Lotus: "The track is superlative and Spa has so much history that I am delighted tohave raced here and made it on to the podium. There is a good spirit in EuroBOSS, likeminded people always willing to share information and this helped me. The car was well prepared by Classic Team Lotus and it is great to finally give this car its racing debut at Spa." Frank Lyons, Driver, Lyons Plant Services: "I had a good start today and made the most of it keeping well ahead of my main class rival, Roger [Kilty]. It was particularly pleasing after an incident yesterday when I scraped along a wall in the heavy rain, thankfully with no significant damage." The next race, a double-header, takes place at Donington, UK, on Sunday 5th October. The EuroBOSS Press Office Team www.euroboss2003.com
